What is it?
Child Smart Mediation is based on Dr. Jen McIntosh’s work from 2006 known as Child Inclusive Mediation. This Evidence Based practice, as studied & published by Dr. Amy Holzworth-Monroe out of the University of Indiana, has resulted in parents working together with less conflict in co parenting their children.
Why Do I need it?
All Mediation is confidential, but this process brings the real voices of the children into the Mediation, and that helps the parents understand what their children are going through during the reorganization of the patent’s relationship with each other. Because Retired Magistrate Judge Sullivan has extensive experience handling children’s issues, training Judges about children’s issues, and understands how to speak with children based on their developmental stage, she meets with each child prior to formal Mediation, the parents can more readily accept the information about the children’s experience and develop an understanding of the way that their interpersonal conflict negatively affects their children when it is delivered by a neutral party. This results in parents finding ways to reduce their conflict. Everyone wins when conflict is diminished resulting in better working relationships and parenting plans!
How does it work?
Through an Informal Child Smart Mediation children’s information is brought back to the parents, after Retired Magistrate Sullivan has met with the child or children. Meetings with the children would take place in person, where the Mediation between the parents would take place on a different day and either in person or over a Zoom conference. During the Mediation she will present the information in a way that reduces the parent’s conflict and allows them to focus on the needs of the children. This feedback is structured to protect the confidentiality of all parties through the confidential Mediation process. In effect, this starts the process of co-parenting off in the most favorable way that preserves the relationships between parents and children…Front-loading the Mediation in this way helps the CSM conduct the confidential Mediation to develop the best parenting plan that builds the relationships between each parent and child.
Is this best for me?
